Congress recently passed the HIRE Act to incent employers to hire people who are unemployed or underemployed. The Act allows employers to forgo paying the employer portion of social security taxes on wages paid in 2010 for qualified employees. This benefit amounts to 6.2% of the wages subject to social security taxes and does not reduce social security benefits for the employee. The Act also allows employers who retain qualified hires for at least a year to claim a $1,000.00 credit on their business tax return for each qualified employee.
Employers who have an opportunity to hire employees who qualify for these incentives can obviously achieve significant tax savings by doing so. Mosaic Employer Solutions makes it easy for employers to capture these incentives by simply processing payroll through its payroll service after having the employee sign form W11.
